The “Notes of Happiness” project is simple, easy, inexpensive, and powerful. It is one of the ways that I am making the world a better, kinder, warmer place.
- Get a blank note card, a piece of paper, napkin, or anything you can write on.
- Pick someone, anyone to write a note to. Take a few minutes to think about why this person is important to you.
- Why are you writing them a note? What have they done to make your life better? Be specific.
- Step away from the noise in your life, be in the moment, and focus only on your note. Enjoy the process.
- Don’t worry about grammar or spelling. Speak from your heart.
- Give your note to the person.
That’s it. You have now officially participated in the “Notes of Happiness” project. I have given out well over 500 blank note cards over the past 5 years.
Places where awesome people have participated in “Notes of Happiness:”
- Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, TX)
- Handley Middle School (Fort Worth, TX)
- Young Women’s Leadership Academy(Fort Worth, TX)
- “Shut Up & Write” weekly writing group (Fort Worth, TX)
- School of Social Work annual conference (Austin, TX)
- Texas Library Association annual conference (Austin, TX)
- Mindfulness & The Creative Process retreat (Palestine, TX)
Some potential benefits of participating in this simple project are:
- You boost your happiness
- You boost someone else’s happiness
- Anyone that hears about the project gets a boost in happiness
I mean…whoa! The science of gratitude really knocks me back, makes me think, and makes me do. Here is the math on kindness and why this project is so close to my heart:
500 cards written + 500 cards received + 500 kindness acts witnessed = 1,500 acts of kindness for $50
I hope I keep running out of cards. I hope I have to keep restocking. I hope people at the store keep asking me why I am buying so many blank note cards.
Are you in?
